Description

Fine pair of early C19th carved mahogany Northern Italian Piedmontese salon armchairs attributed to Henry Thomas Peters of Genoa.

Raised on turned and carved forelegs, having shapely carved scroll arms and elaborate carved and pierced lumbar bars and backs. The top rail centred with a carved stylised anthemion motif . Recently expertly and sympathetically re-upholstered and covered in a high quality fabric.

Although not stamped by the maker, this fine quality pair of mahogany-framed armchairs of strongly Empire-influenced design ,are firmly attributed to Henry Thomas Peters of Genoa .

In excellent original condition with no damage or repairs, having a rich colour and patina.

*The English cabinet-maker Henry Thomas Peters ,was known for his distinctive Empire-influenced designs. Peters (1792-1852) relocated to Italy in 1817 , and established workshops in the former convent of Santa Brigida , Genoa . His distinctive style attracted patronage from the Italian Royalty, aristocracy and bourgeoisie, in particular the Court of Savoy . Peters worked extensively with the Piedmontese architect Pelagio Pelagi , who commissioned furniture from him for King Carlo Alberto at the Royal Palace of Genova , the Palazzo Reale Turn and Castello Reale di Racconigi .

NB . A set of 12 mahogany dining chairs of similar design attributed to Henry Thomas Peters of Genoa sold Christie’s, London 27/6/2007 £21,600.
