An exquisite painting of a woman, probably the artists wife, set amongst the roses in a country garden. Bonnardel specialised in painting elegantes during the Belle Epoque era.
Alexandre François Bonnardel entered the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon on February 23, 1891 in the studio of Antoine Christian Zacharie (1819-1899). He became a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Poncet and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he obtained a first medal in 1899. In 1904 he exhibited at the Paris Salon.
In 1900, he was appointed professor of the live model class at the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon. He resigned in 1918 following the scandal surrounding an affair with one of his students.
