Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century in France, decorative lighting transitioned from oil and paraffin mechanisms to early electrical fittings. Manufacturers frequently combined vibrant coloured glass, such as opaline glass, with ornate gilt metal casting influenced by Rococo and Louis XV revival designs.

These lamps typically featured opaque or translucent hand-blown glass columns paired with cast brass or gilt bronze (ormolu) bases. Internal structural rods held the glass and metal components together securely.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy cast bronze or brass bases with natural aged patination rather than lightweight modern alloys. Look for pontil marks on glass components, evidence of original oil burner mountings or conversion threading, and crisp relief detail in the metalwork.

Place the lamp base on a neutral sideboard, side table, or desk to allow the saturated glass colour to serve as a focal point. Pair it with a simple, modern drum or empire shade in silk or linen to balance the historic detail of the base.

Dust the glass and metal regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes on the metal, as these can strip historical gilt finishes or natural oxidisation layers.
