£6,750    $9,004    €8,023
An early 19th century (circa 1820) oak library table of large proportions with Elizabethan and Jacobean influences in the manner of Richard Bridgens (1785-1846).

This table consists of a solid oak octagonal top with carved moulded edge with foliate decoration leading down to a bold frieze below.

The frieze consisting of four frieze drawers and four dummy drawers all with blind fret strapwork and applied carved lozenge embellishments with a moulded edge below, each corner with carved and fluted block with turned drop finials.

The table is supported by a spiral column with foliate and lunette carved decoration below leading down to a carved collar, the quatre-form concave base with foliate and lunette carved decoration with carved floral design to each corner, all supported on bold carved bun feet with recessed castors below.

Richard Hicks Bridgens (1785-1846) was an architect, designer, draughtsman and lithographer who studied under the famous cabinet-maker George Bullock living with him in Liverpool.

Bridgens exhibited at Liverpool Academy between 1810-1812 and the Royal Academy between 1813-1826 moving to London in 1814 and continued to work for Bullock until his death when Bridgens set up his own business in Birmingham in 1819.

Richard Bridgens wrote and designed a book in 1838, ‘Furniture with candelabra and interior decoration’ – his designs particularly incorporating Elizabethan and Jacobean styles, motifs and embellishment, these styles emulating that of history and one that remained popular throughout the 19th century.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a property – it would be an ideal table for a library or used as a centre table etc. being a real statement piece.
