Description

Cantagalli pottery vase, ‘Antelopes’ painted after a design by William de Morgan, c. 1900. The classical shaped vase, having strap handles, terminating at the body with grotesque masks.

Finely hand painted to one side, with an Antelope, standing amongst rocks, and flowering plants. The reverse with two further Antelopes, in a similar setting.

Painted cockerel mark to the base.

Height – 31 cm, 12 1/8”.

Width (Handle to handle) – 26.5 cm, 10 1/2”.

Depth – 19 cm, 7 1/2”.

Condition – Excellent.

After his marriage to Evelyn in 1887, the de Morgan’s were frequent travellers to Florence, and acquired their own apartment to spend the Winter, due to William’s health. Whilst there, de Morgan developed a friendship with Ulisse Cantagalli and collaborated with the factory artists, most notably A. Farini, in the production of wares.
