Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Violins from the nineteenth century feature hand-carved tone-woods, traditional spirit or oil varnishes, and purfling details around the body edges. Cases from this era were frequently constructed from wood covered in heavy patterned leather or animal skin with fitted, velvet-lined interiors to protect the instrument.

Authentic violins were constructed using spruce for the top soundboard, maple for the back, sides, and neck, and ebony for the fingerboard and pegs. Cases typically featured solid wood frames, textured leather exteriors, and soft cotton velvet linings.

Authentic period violins display natural varnish wear, hand-carved scroll details, and precise wooden purfling rather than painted lines. Internal paper labels, corner block construction, and signs of aged wood shrinkage also indicate historical production.

An antique violin outfit can be styled open on a sideboard or grand piano top to showcase the interior contrast between the rich wood tones and plush lining. Displaying the instrument within its original open case adds texture and a curio-cabinet feel to classic living spaces.

Maintain the violin and case in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations. Dust the wood gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply leather cream sparingly to the outer case exterior to keep the skin supple.
