Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late 18th-century England, the Canterbury was originally designed as a mobile partition rack to store sheet music and bound volumes. Over the Regency and Victorian eras, craftsmen combined the Canterbury base with tiered whatnot display shelves to create a versatile piece of accent furniture for drawing rooms.

Fine period examples typically feature walnut, burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood veneers laid over oak or pine carcases. Construction features include hand-turned support columns, pierced X-frame dividers, hand-cut dovetail joints on lower drawers, and cast brass gallery rails and castors.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved details, natural shrinkage lines along veneer seams, and period-correct brass hardware such as original brass castors and pierced top galleries. Lower drawers often display hand-cut dovetails and period drawer linings.

A Canterbury whatnot serves as a multi-functional accent piece alongside a sofa or armchair, functioning as a side table while providing open storage for magazines, large art books, or tablet devices. The top shelf provides an elevated platform for a table lamp or small decorative object.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Protect the delicate burr walnut veneer by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
