We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hat boxes became popular in the nineteenth century as formal headwear such as top hats and bonnets required sturdy protection during travel. Crafted from durable materials like bridle leather or sheet metal, these containers were essential accessories for prosperous Victorian and Edwardian travellers.

Traditional Victorian hat boxes were typically constructed from heavy hide leather with hand-stitched seams, or formed from japanned tin and iron. Interior linings often featured fabric, velvet, or paper, while latches and handles were crafted from brass, iron, or reinforced leather.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature thick hand-stitched leather edging, natural surface patination, and heavy brass or iron hardware. Period details such as original travel labels, maker stamps, or historical monogramming further confirm age and origin.

Antique hat boxes function as decorative accents when stacked on sideboards, console tables, or deep window sills. They bring rich texture to traditional, coastal, or eclectic interiors while offering subtle concealed storage for small household items.

Leather surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry cloth and treated periodically with a specialised leather balm to prevent drying and cracking. Metal cases require gentle cleaning with a dry cloth to prevent rust, and both should be kept away from direct heat sources and damp environments.
