Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian bedsteads, dating from approximately 1901 to 1910, feature lighter proportions than earlier Victorian designs. They frequently incorporate delicate satinwood or boxwood string inlay, vertical slats, and gentle cresting curves influenced by Arts and Crafts style.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid mahogany framing with fine mahogany veneers accented by decorative boxwood or satinwood stringing. The side rails were usually constructed from cast iron or steel with metal drop-in brackets fitting into the corner posts.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise and tenon timber joinery, genuine hand-cut timber stringing rather than printed decorative lines, and period cast-iron rail fixings. Square tapered corner posts often terminate in original brass or porcelain castors.

Pair the dark mahogany timber with crisp white bedding and neutral wall colours such as taupe or muted green. Combining the structured wood frame with soft modern textiles creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern decor.

Dust the wood frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice per year along the grain. Keep the bed away from direct heat sources and sunlight to preserve the original finish and prevent timber shrinkage.
