A Superb W (***) Factory Porcelain Bough Pot & Cover C.1800

18th century
Description

A superb W(***) Factory Bough Pot & Cover c.1800.  Wonderfully decorated possibly by William Billingsley with a landscape panel to the front, almost certainly when he was operating from Mansfield, in the period 1799–1802.

The piece bears the impressed mark of the enigmatic W(***) factory.

It is thought (but not known for certain) that that factory was operated by the Whitehead family-Whitehead senior having three sons-hence the three stars.

Condition: Small chip to base invisibly restored. Small rim chips to lid and worn gilding restored.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bough pots were introduced in the mid-to-late eighteenth century to bring greenery and fresh blooms indoors. Designed with pierced covers or individual apertures, they held branches and flower stems upright to adorn hearths and chimneypieces during warm summer months when fireplaces were unused.

Regency bough pots were typically crafted from fine soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain, as well as lead-glazed earthenware. Decoration frequently involved hand-applied overglaze enamel painting and hand-burnished mercury gilding.

Authentic pieces from this period display hand-painted topographical or pastoral scenes, finely detailed gilding, and subtle manufacturing irregularities typical of early kiln firing. Marks from prominent English factories such as Worcester, Flight & Barr, or Derby may be incised or painted on the underside.

A porcelain bough pot works effectively as a focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard centrepiece, or positioned within a curated display cabinet. Its historic gilding and landscape painting add visual texture when contrasted against muted, modern wall finishes.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a slightly damp cloth with lukewarm water. Avoid immersion, chemical detergents, and abrasive materials, as these can strip delicate mercury gilding and overglaze enamel painting.
