Rare 19th Century Glass Claret Jug C1880 By Stevens & Williams

Technical Description
 
A superb and very rare example of a Stevens & Williams glass claret jug dating to c1880.
 
Red applied trailing to the neck with a crimped clear base. Angular applied handle and conical body. Clear crimped collar above matching trailing to the circular foot which has a clear raspberry prunt to the pontil.

Condition
 
Excellent, no chips or cracks, clean and clear. The trailing is all intact.

A pristine example of Victorian machine threading. Applied trailing and coils of molten glass have been used as a decorative technique for centuries, the process was uneven and required extreme precision from the glassblower. In 1876, William James Hodgetts of the glassmaking firm Hodgetts Richardson & Sons took out a patent that employed the use of an apparatus to apply the threading.
