Comments
A pristine example of Victorian machine threading. Applied trailing and coils of molten glass have been used as a decorative technique for centuries, the process was uneven and required extreme precision from the glassblower. In 1876, William James Hodgetts of the glassmaking firm Hodgetts Richardson & Sons took out a patent that employed the use of an apparatus to apply the threading. This patent should have provided some protections however it wasn’t long before ...most of the glasshouses in the Stourbridge area (one of the major glassmaking hubs of England) had adopted the technique, most famously Stevens and Williams used it to great effect as seen here.
