Japanese Meiji/Taisho (early 20thC) silk embroidered panel depicting two (male and female) lions, based on a lion painting by Kamisaka Shoto (1882-1954). 39.5cm wide x 29 high. It is not framed.
 
The three-dimensional effect is created through the shades of silk thread, while the lion''s fur is delicately conveyed with the texture unique to the thread. Considered the pinnacle of Japanese embroidery, this panel is said to have taken over a year to create. Such works are displayed in art museums around the world.
 
Excellent original condition.
