Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1880s.
There is a highly decorative shield shaped cartouche to the top with a complimentary escutcheon, both made from Mother of Pearl, which houses the tasselled key, unfortunately for decorative purposes only as it currently is not working.
There is a brass button at the back which when pressed releases the spring-loaded drawer with it's vibrant purple velvet lining, perfect for those delicate pieces of jewellery or wrist watches.

The interior of the lid is lined in velvet with a spring next to the lid lock which when pushed releases the lid and reveals a travel mirror on the reverse side.
Excellent condition and an impressive size, measuring 12" x 9" x 7" with a rich glossy patina showcasing the stunning markings of this highly prized timber.
