17th Century English William and Mary Period Walnut Escritoire

17th century
Description

A Rare Late 17th Century William and Mary Period Walnut Escritoire or Writing Cabinet.

This lovely piece is of smaller than usual proportions and retains a very fine colour and patination. It consists of a fall front writing surface concealing an arrangement of small drawers, with beautifully executed linings and fine dovetails, and pigeon holes, designed to act as the all-in-one home office solution of its day. Hidden in the cushion-shaped frieze above the fall front is a pull out secret drawer and beneath the fall front are two short and two longer drawers of more conventional form. The piece stands on flattened bun feet.

Pieces of this sort were only available to the wealthiest people of the period. They seem to have been used in both reception rooms and bedrooms but the smaller proportions of our piece suggest that it was probably designed for a bedroom setting, providing storage space and a filing cabinet system, as well as a writing slope, in a single piece of furniture.

A rare surviving piece of furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late seventeenth-century Britain, William and Mary furniture reflects Dutch and French influences, characterized by intricate veneering, walnut timber, turned legs, bun feet, and refined brass hardware.

These cabinets typically feature solid pine or oak carcases veneered in figured walnut, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, moulded cornices, and cast brass drop handles mounted on pierced or engraved backplates.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, thick hand-cut walnut veneers, heavy pine drawer linings with irregular dovetailing, original lock mechanisms, and historic surface patination.

A large period cabinet acts as a focal statement piece in a study, drawing room, or hallway, paired alongside contemporary architectural lighting or minimalist neutral upholstery to highlight the wood grain.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level, keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax periodically to protect the original finish.
