Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Trestle tables are among the earliest forms of dining furniture in Europe, originating in the Middle Ages when dining spaces were multi-functional. The design evolved into fixed French provincial furniture in subsequent centuries, characterised by heavy timber tops supported by structural end frames and stretchers.

Traditional construction relies on solid hardwoods, primarily oak or walnut, joined using mortise and tenon joinery. The central stretcher beam is frequently secured using removable timber pegs or wedges, known as keyed tenons, which hold the pedestal bases firmly together.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hewn surface textures, hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, and natural patination around wear points such as the stretcher rail. Look for historical pegged construction and structural variations in the oak planking that reflect traditional hand-tooling.

A large timber dining table acts as an anchor piece in open-plan spaces or dedicated dining rooms. Pair it with modern upholstered chairs or mid-century seating to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist contemporary design.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax paste once or twice a year along the grain. Clean spills immediately with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or silicon-based sprays that disrupt the timber finish.
