Hay Wagon & Horses Irish Rural Landscape Oil Paintings Equine Village Life Portraits

1900 - 1920
Description

A QUALITY HUGE SCALE OIL ON CANVAS BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED DEPICTING AN ELDERLY MAN STOPPING TO WATER HIS TWO THIRSTY HORSES PULLING A CANVAS TOP HAY CART

This is an interesting and colourful painting full of character and charm.

The scene is of a rural village which carefully captures life on the road back in 1928 pausing to water horses whilst travelling along a dirt road.

The gent wearing a cap, carries a full bucket of water from the nearby cast iron water pump. The canvas topped hay cart carries his supplies and a round bale of hay.

Note the horses attention being captured as they glance towards the reward they are about to receive.

There are two small thatched collages in the distance and colourful trees and foliage behind a stone block wall.

The artist has monogramed his initials in the bottom right hand corner, signing W.H.

The painting is also dated 1928.

I was very excited to be able to acquire this painting, and debated for quite a while about keeping it for myself.

A very unique painting in a class of its own showing rural village life.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rural landscape paintings from the early 20th century typically depict agricultural life, working farm animals, and country scenes, reflecting traditional farming methods prior to widespread mechanisation.

Artists commonly used oil paints applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, occasionally working on wooden panels or artist boards prepared with gesso grounds.

Authentic works from this period often display natural craquelure across the paint layer, age-related oxidation on the reverse of the canvas, and period-appropriate signatures or monograms.

A rural oil painting can be styled above a sideboard or mantelpiece to add colour and texture, serving as a focal point in traditional, rustic, or eclectic interiors.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting them lightly with a soft brush, and consulting a professional restorer for deep cleaning.
