A fine example of a mid 19thc ''pocket'' screw type nutcracker, made out of fruitwood and oak....it is in very good condition with a superb colour....these collectable little nutcrackers were kept in your pocket, as you went on your country rambles, ready for use when you came across cobb nuts / hazelnuts in the hedgerows and woods....several of these nutcrackers show teeth marks on the handle from previous owners trying to crack nuts by tightening the handle with their teeth, to get extra pressure, but I''m sure it didn''t do their teeth any good...!
English. C1840-60. Provenance of the Brian Hawtin collection.
