Qianlong Chinese Canton enamel jardinière

18th century Chinese enamel jardinière, bonsai planter. Rectangular with canted corners of caveto form, the frieze decorated with Greek key decoration as are the bracket feet. The body profusely decorated with flowers and four oval plaques, two with Chinese figures to the sides, and to the ends, pagodas within landscapes. The interior is pink.

Canton enamel refers to decorative copper vessels coated with vitreous enamel glazes and painted with detailed motifs. Developed in Guangzhou (Canton) during the 18th century Qing Dynasty, the technique was influenced by European enamelling methods brought by artisans and traders.

These items were crafted using a shaped copper or bronze alloy substrate. Vitreous enamel glazes were applied in layers, hand-painted with mineral pigments, and repeatedly fired in kilns to achieve durable, colourful surface finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit considerable weight due to the thick copper body, fine hair-line craquelure in the glaze, and traditional decorative elements such as blue key-fret borders, yellow grounds, and finely executed landscape panels.
