In 1825, Nathaniel Mills registered his punch mark ''N.M'' in a rectangle at the Birmingham Assay Office. This marked the beginning of his work as a solo silversmith. Mills was a prolific box maker in Birmingham who created silver and gold objects, including vinaigrettes, card cases, and snuff boxes. His work is known for its castle-top designs, which feature British landmarks engraved on the lids.
