Imari ware originates from the Arita region of Japan and is characterised by its distinctive underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gold embellishments. During the 19th century, these porcelain pieces were produced extensively for both domestic appreciation and international export.

Artisans crafted these pieces using hard-paste kaolin clay, firing the body with underglaze cobalt blue details first. After glazing, detailed overglaze enamel colours, particularly iron red and gold leaf, were applied before a final low-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic 19th-century Imari chargers typically feature spurred kiln marks on the reverse, rich asymmetric panelled decoration, dense geometric scrolling, and visible hand-painted variations. The unglazed porcelain foot rim often displays a greyish-white paste with occasional iron spots.

Mount the charger securely on a focal wall using a specialised plate hanger, or display it on a plate easel positioned atop a console table or sideboard. Its saturated colour palette complements both neutral modern backdrops and traditional dark wood furniture.
