Mid Century 1.00 Carat Transitional Cut Diamond Engagement Ring, Circa 1950

1940 - 1960
Description

A classic vintage diamond engagement ring. The diamond in the centre - graded by IGI as H colour, VS1 clarity - is dazzlingly white and internally clean. The stone is set in a platinum eight-claw rex collet which sits on a slim and tapering 18k white gold shank.

Although IGI have described the cut as Round Brilliant, the diamond has many characteristics of an Old European Cut - slightly smaller table, cut culet, burnished girdle - making this a transitional cut (a very rare cut that bridged old European cut and round brilliant) rather than a modern round brilliant.

Accompanied by a diamond report from IGI.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Transitional cut diamonds were produced roughly between the 1920s and 1950s, bridging the design gap between Old European cuts and modern Round Brilliants. They feature a lower crown, larger table, and smaller culet than older cuts, offering balanced light refraction in a classic setting.

Mid-century solitaire rings were predominantly constructed using platinum or white gold to complement the bright white tones of the diamond. Yellow gold bands with platinum head mounts were also popular to combine durability with neutral diamond backdrops.

Authentic pieces from this period often display hand-finished claw settings, geometric under-gallery work, and hallmarks indicating metal purity. Examination under magnification reveals the characteristic faceted proportions of a transitional cut diamond.

A classic solitaire design integrates effortlessly with contemporary metal bands or textured eternity rings. Stacking thin, modern platinum or gold bands alongside a mid-century solitaire creates a balanced, multi-era aesthetic.

Clean the piece gently using warm water, mild detergent, and a soft-bristled brush to remove accumulation behind the setting. Regular professional inspections ensure that the prongs remain tight and structurally sound over time.
