Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Davenport desk is a compact writing cabinet named after Captain Davenport, who commissioned the original design in the late 18th century. Characterised by a sloped writing surface, side drawers, and often a pop-up stationery compartment, it became a standard form of office furniture during the Victorian era.

Victorian Davenports were commonly constructed from solid hardwoods and veneers such as rosewood, walnut, and mahogany, often featuring secondary drawer linings of pine, oak, or birds eye maple. Writing surfaces were typically inset with tool-gilded leather.

Authentic Victorian examples usually exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, brass locks, and hand-carved cabriole front supports. The pop-up mechanism traditionally operates via spring-loaded catches or counterweights built inside the rear cabinet structure.

A Davenport desk functions well in a study corner, hallway, or living room alcove. Pairing the dark timber with light walls and subtle modern brass lighting highlights the architectural shape and detail of the woodwork.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain when needed. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level and avoid positioning the desk near direct heat sources or unshaded windows.
