Early C19th rosewood-cased brass-mounted marine ‘stick’ barometer signed by Stebbing & Son of Portsmouth.
High quality instrument in a figured rosewood case , having glazed inscribed ivorine scales and a turned bone knob for adjustment of the Vernier scale atmospheric pressure indicator . The centre of the body set with a thermometer.
The elegant slender rosewood body with a brass-cased cylindrical cistern to the base and fitted with the original adjustable brass gimbal for wall mounting. The domed top of the case fitted with it’s original brass suspension ring .
In excellent original condition, the rosewood having achieved a rich colour and patina and the brass-ware with an aged surface and patina .
The company of Stebbing & Son, was founded by George Stebbing (1775-1847) who moved to Portsmouth in 1800 from Holborn , London . The firm were recognised by the Admiralty as makers of high quality nautical instruments . Stebbing’s eldest son George James , travelled on H.M.S Beagle with Charles Darwin as ‘instrument-maker’ to the ship .
