Antique Country Furniture 19thc Yew & Elm Windsor Low-back Chair. English C1840-60.

I was so pleased to have just bought this beautiful mid 19thc yew and elm Windsor low-back...it is of the type which is quite uncommon,.... even I have not had an example before ....it has a pleasing conformation and classic early look with the way the yew wood arm bow is bent around the whole top of the chair, it is slightly raised in the central section of the back and terminates with skilfully shaped scroll ends....all supported by nineteen tapered yew wood spindles....the seat is the only part made from elm and it is supported by four yew turned triple ring concave legs which terminate on shapely turned feet....a true testament to the skill of the chair maker or ''bodger'' as they were called, who made this handsome chair with very simple tools....the colour as you would expect from yew and elm is very good and the chair is in original condition with no repairs....

English - Buckinghamshire. C1840-60.
