Henri Vincent-Anglade was an acclaimed French portrait painter and advertising illustrator.
He was born in Bordeaux on 9 May 1876, the son of Charles Vincent. He became a pupil of at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied under Gustav Moreau and others.

In the early part of his career Vincent-Anglade became a fashionable portrait painter and specialised in intimate paintings of women. He was sought after for his sensuous use of light and tone to convey delicate and nuanced emotions. He exhibited his works at the Salon in Paris and all the regular exhibitions.

Vincent-Anglade was a sociable man, who liked to spend time his leisure time at greyhound and horse races. He became recognised as a skilled painter of animals (as well as women) and was particularly adept at capturing the spirit of their movement, well before photography was able to do this.

He was a very forward- looking man, keen to embrace the emerging twentieth century, and he produced many humorous works which were published in the major magazines of the time. He was also part of the advertising industry in the early days of the motorcar, producing illustrations for Peugeot and later for other brands too.

This exquisite oil on canvas painting, La Muse (1937), is a masterful work by the French artist Henri Vincent-Anglade. The composition features a nude female figure in a seated, contemplative pose, rendered with rich, expressive brushstrokes and a warm, luminous palette. The model’s softly illuminated skin contrasts beautifully with the darker, impressionistic background, evoking an intimate and introspective atmosphere. Her short, bobbed hairstyle would have been very risqué at the time.

The painting is signed and dated in the upper right corner, confirming its authenticity and historical significance. La Muse stands as a testament to early 20th-century French academic and impressionist traditions, making it a valuable addition to collections of nude portraiture, figurative art, and European modernist works.
