Vincenzo D’Espoisito was an Italian artist who came from a family of artists renown for painting ships off Malta. He was commissioned to paint various commercial and military vessels in the early part of the twentieth century.

HMS Nairana has an interesting history, which can be found in full on the Big Sky Fine Art website. She was originally a passenger ferry, commissioned as a seaplane carrier for the Royal Navy in 1917, and served in the First World War and other military operations. She spent the latter part of her career as a passenger ferry between Tasmania and Melbourne.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marine art focuses on ocean settings, maritime trade, and naval vessels, often executed with high technical accuracy regarding ship design, rigging, and naval ensigns.

Works from this period were commonly executed in gouache, watercolour, or oil on paper or canvas, protected by glass and mounted within moulded timber frames.

Authentic works often feature legible artist signatures, historical accuracy in ship proportions, period-appropriate paper aging, and original framer labels on the reverse.

A historical marine artwork can be mounted above a dark timber sideboard, within a library setting, or alongside brass lighting fixtures to complement a classic aesthetic.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, maintain a stable humidity level, and ensure UV-filtering glass is used during framing.
