Vincenzo D’Espoisito was an Italian artist who came from a family of artists renown for painting ships off Malta. He was commissioned to paint various commercial and military vessels in the early part of the twentieth century.

HMS Nairana has an interesting history, which can be found in full on the Big Sky Fine Art website. She was originally a passenger ferry, commissioned as a seaplane carrier for the Royal Navy in 1917, and served in the First World War and other military operations. She spent the latter part of her career as a passenger ferry between Tasmania and Melbourne.
