Pair of Large Majolica Vases C.1870

Description

Spectacular pair of large majolica vases or epergne by the Belgian pottery makers Boch Freres Keramis c.1870. Probably intended as decoration for the centre of a grand dining table holding fruit or seafood perhaps. 10" diameter bowls modelled as scallop shells supported by a pair of Classical putti with fishes tails. The bases modelled as rocks with leaves and rushes and surrounded by water. Bright hand painted colouring and majolica glaze. Impressed marks for Boch Freres Keramis to the underside. Presented as found in excellent original condition.

Victorian majolica is a type of earthenware characterised by vibrant, translucent lead glazes fired over moulded relief decoration. Introduced at the Great Exhibition of 1851 by Minton, it quickly became popular for its colourful, naturalistic, and whimsical designs.

Majolica vases were crafted from press-moulded or slip-cast earthenware clay. After an initial bisque firing, clear coloured lead glazes were hand-applied to distinct areas of the relief design before a second firing.

Authentic pieces feature sharp detail from quality moulds, rich glaze depth with controlled colour bleed, and a relatively heavy earthenware body. Period pieces frequently show maker marks, pattern numbers, or registration diamonds stamped on the base.
