Antique Coco De Mer Seed Pod

19th century
Description

The coco de mer palm produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom. The palm is found in only two of the 115 islands in the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is known as an endemic species. The empty seed pods were discovered floating in the sea by seafarers. They had been swept away on tidal currents. Similarity to the female form made the fruits highly collectable.

A fine and large example, wonderfully tactile.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Coco de Mer, produced by the Lodoicea maldivica palm endemic to the Seychelles, produces the largest and heaviest seed in the plant kingdom. Historically gathered as ocean drift items before the botanical source was located, these specimens became prized additions to European cabinets of curiosities from the sixteenth century onwards.

The seed consists of a dense, fibrous shell forming a characteristic bilobed shape reminiscent of a double coconut. When hollowed and dried, the exterior displays deep longitudinal ridges and a natural dark brown to polished black surface.

Authentic specimens display organic surface irregularities, natural growth seams, and a dense, fibrous texture that synthetic reproductions cannot replicate. Genuine historical examples often exhibit natural patina, subtle age cracking along the central seam, and hollowed interiors.

Designers frequently position a Coco de Mer as a standalone sculptural object on a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or within open shelving. It functions effectively alongside leather-bound books, brass instruments, or modern minimalist ceramics to create visual interest.

To preserve the organic shell, store the item in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents.
