Lucien Hector JONAS (1880-1947)
Dijon France 1938
A stylish “en plein air” painting of the town square in Dijon painted in May 1938. Painted in oil on to paper and then mounted on canvas. This is a technique favoured by Jonas. Titled, dated, indistinctly signed on the stretcher verso and presented in its original highly decorative frame.
Provenance
Purchased at auction in France which featured many works by Jonas. Copy invoice available to purchaser.
In 1899 Jonas entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris where he quickly established a reputation for his work. He was accepted as a member of the Society of French Artists in 1901. At the Salon of 1905 he won a silver medal and three other prizes. Further success followed when he won the second prize in the Grand Prix of Rome 1905. He represented France in the 1932 Summer Olympic art competition. He was attached to the Army Museum as their military painter in 1915 before becoming the official French Navy painter in 1916. The Salon des Artistes Francais awarded him a medal of honour in 1945.
Condition
In good sound original condition. The frame has restoration in places.
