Fine Ormolu and Sevres Porcelain Clock Antique French - Gun Dog

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1855 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning ormolu clock by Achille Brocot & Delettrez, celebrating hunting and fishing. Finely made in mercury fire gilded Bronze Doré and mounted with Sèvres style porcelain. It features a beautifully depicted figure of a gun dog to the top, seated on the forest floor with oak leaves and acorns, a bird he has retrieved at his feet.

Exquisite Sèvres style porcelain panels have a Bleu Celeste ground and are finely painted with animals, hunting horns, a gun and floral swags. To one side is a motif of hunting with a hare, a horn and a gun and to the other a motif of fishing with an anchor and the days catch.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper, it is signed to the bottom and is complete with its original Breguet hands. Please note that this type of clock does not has a glazed bezel or a rear door.

The French movement is of superb quality and is by Achille Brocot & Delettrez. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste the following into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/DragonAntiques/videos/1279704016432141

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some slight wear in places, particularly the rear (where less gold was originally applied) and the leaves below the dog. Porcelain is also excellent with just some slight wear to the overglaze gilt decoration. The dial has some hairlineing. There is an old repair to one rear foot.

Achille Brocot was a member of the renowned Brocot clockmaking family, the eldest son of Louis Gabriel Brocot. He was treasurer to La Société des Horlogers in Paris and was awarded First Class Medal at the 1855 Paris Exhibition - Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers.

Jean-Baptiste Delettrez (1816-1887) was a renowned 19th-century French clockmaker. He is listed as working in Tardy Dictionnaire des Horlogers at Rue de Berry au Marais in 1850.

Delettrez and Achille Brocot, established a clockmaking company at 62 Rue Charlot in Paris in 1851 (Tardy). The firm was awarded a 1st class prize at the Paris World Exposition of 1857. This innovative and fruitful partnership continued until the death of Brocot in 1878.
