This is a very pretty silver compact, made by Adie Brothers, Birmingham, in 1938. Of octagonal form, the lid is silver guilloche enamel, beautifully hand painted with poppies and cornflowers, in vivid red, blue, green and yellow, above pronounced sunrays and a bead edging. The edge also has distinct enamel panelling. The reverse of this piece is decorated, with an overall, engineered pattern. Inside, the mirror is clear and the hallmark is very crisp. There are finger catches and the compact has a good strong hinge and snaps shut. There is an accompanying powder puff which, in my opinion, is a replacement. The original blue suedette case is retained. With few signs of wear, this is a colourful collector''s piece, in excellent antique condition, with no damage to the enamel or the silver, and no repairs.
