Description

This exceptionally rare porcelain lidded broth cup by Richard Ginori was crafted in Italy in the mid-19th century. It features the stunning "Coreano" pattern in red and blue, inspired by the Imari style. The round cup is adorned with elegantly scrolled handles and hand-painted floral motifs in iron red, cobalt blue, and gold.

The lid showcases a woven basket-like relief texture, decorated with floral designs and topped with a rose-shaped finial. As Richard Ginori did not use marking stamps until the 1950s, this piece carries no marks.

Founded in 1735 by Marquis Carlo Ginori near Florence, Richard Ginori is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious porcelain manufacturers. Renowned for its timeless designs and exceptional craftsmanship, the brand catered to European aristocracy in the 19th century, producing both functional and decorative porcelain with floral, mythological, and neoclassical themes. A lidded broth cup, often referred to as an ecuelle or scodella, is a shallow vessel with two handles and a fitted lid, designed in Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to serve broths, soups, and warm restorative liquids.

These vessels were typically crafted from hard-paste porcelain, painted by hand using mineral enamels, and highlighted with liquid gold gilding before firing. Moulded relief decoration, such as basketweave or fluted edging, was also integrated into the body design.

Authentic mid-nineteenth-century Ginori pieces usually bear stamped or hand-painted factory marks, such as the Doccia or Ginori makers stamps, showing subtle irregularities in enamel thickness, hand-gilded trim, and slight wear around the unglazed foot rim.
