A Small Portrait of Geo IV

19th century
Description

A very unusual painting of George IV....in oil on a porcelain tile. A period label applied to the rear is inscribed ' GEORGE THE IV PAINTED ON PORCELAIN BY SIR WILLIAM BEECHEY'' The detail to The Order of the Garter and The Order of The Golden Fleece is well defined. The eyes are expressive and well painted.

Sir William Beechey was appointed to the King and did paint some outstanding portraits in his time this is not of such quality. However...he did paint small portraits and miniatures and his second wife was a well known miniature painter...they married in 1793. The rear of the tile shows in our opinion the correct level of age as does the applied label.....there is no signature or date. More research is required.

Sold together with the display easel.

The tile measures 18 cm by 18 cm (7'')

The easel measures 14.5 cm wide by 40.5 max high

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency portraiture from the early nineteenth century is defined by formal poses, stylised lighting, and meticulous attention to period clothing, military honours, and high stock collars.

Artists during this period typically applied ground oil pigments onto solid wooden panels or stretched linen canvas, finishing the surface with natural resin varnish layers for protection.

Authentic works from this period usually demonstrate natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate varnish discolouration, period-accurate costume details, and historical panel construction.

Small historical portraits can be integrated into contemporary interiors by placing them on mantelpieces, displaying them within library bookshelves, or grouping them into gallery walls alongside modern artwork.

To preserve an antique oil portrait, keep it away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dust it lightly with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning.
