A very fine Edwardian well figured satinwood bowfronted bookcase in the manner of Edward and Roberts, London, of exceptional quality, line inlaid, fabulously carved with gorgeously rich patination, grain and with stunning marquetry detail of trailing foliate and a pair of striking panels depicting Neoclassical scenes. The overhanging pediment raised over moulded stepped cornice above twin astragal glazed panel doors with decorative brass closing slip opening to shelved interior. Raised over two panelled cupboard doors with a pair of fabulous oval panels to the central reserves depicting exquisite marquetry inlaid Neoclassical figural hunting scenes, above serpentine apron, terminating on elegantly tapering out-splayed foot.
Edward & Roberts
Edward and Roberts were founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Edward and Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
