A Very Good Quality, Extremely Well Matched, Pair Of Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Galleried Tops With Pierced Handles, Over Sliding Tambour Cupboard Doors And Converted Pull Out Drawers, With Replacement Old Brass Handles, Raised On Square Chamfered Legs.
These are a good example of the stereotypical Georgian bedside night table. At some point in their history they have been matched together into a pair, which is extremely common due to a relentless demand over many years for matching tables either side of a bed, in combination to the relative scarcity and therefore extremely high price of any true pairs which can occasionally be found on the market.
The differences are relatively minor, with just some ever so slightly different mouldings in places, plus one being half an inch wider and quarter of an inch deeper than the other the only real difference to speak of, alongside the handles being positioned at a slightly different height. Frankly, it takes extremely close inspection, with them side by side and back to back to notice any differences at all, so either side of a bed or similar there is absolutely no way one would be able to see any differences.
It is indeed quite possible that they were made in the same workshop originally. The tambour door is a very functional feature, meaning less space is required than those which have cupboard doors that open out. They retain a nice rich colour and patina.
The design continues to prove an extremely popular option for bedside tables due to its relative sturdiness, especially when compared to various other bedside options, the storage its able to offer and the tray type tops which make it much less likely items perched on the top will get knocked over.
