Napoleonic Prisoner Of War Spinning Jenny Bone Automaton Folk Art C1810.

This folk art spinning Jenny which would have been made by a Napoleonic prisoner of war in the early 1800s would have been hand carved using materials that were available including mutton bone and is in the form of a female wearing a large bonnet operating a spinning wheel. The handle can be turned to operate the spinning wheel. She has hand painted detail to the face and carved details to her dress.
 
These type of carved bone objects would have made by prisoners of war and sold to British military officers in order to make some money or given as gifts.
 
This early 19th century Napoleonic Prisoner of War item is a desirable collector''s piece.
 
Material: Mutton Bone.
 
Date: c1810.
 
Dimensions: Width: 5.5 cm (2 1/4''). Depth: 4.5 cm (1 3/4''). Height: 10.5 cm (4'').
 
Weight: 44 g.
 
Condition: Good antique condition with signs of wear. Some nibbles, wear, old repairs and losses. One arm is missing. Cog wheels turn using the handle which turns the spinning wheel but does not fully operate. Please see pictures.
