Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fireback is a heavy cast iron plate placed against the rear wall of a fireplace. Its primary purpose was to protect the background masonry from intense heat damage while reflecting radiant warmth forward into the room.

Traditional firebacks were manufactured using sand casting techniques, pouring molten iron into sand moulds impressed with carved wooden patterns. This process created detailed relief ornamentation and a distinct textured surface.

Authentic historical firebacks display subtle surface irregularities, minor pit marks from sand casting, and natural graphite or dark patination. They are substantially heavy for their size and exhibit irregular wear on the rear face.

In addition to placement within an active or decorative hearth alcove, firebacks can be installed as heat-resistant kitchen splashbacks behind a range stove or mounted on a wall as architectural ironwork.

Cast iron should be kept dry to avoid oxidisation. Dust can be removed with a stiff brush, and an application of traditional black grate polish or iron wax will maintain the dark tone and shield against moisture.
