Antique Georgian Inlaid Mahogany Apothecary Box Chest Cabinet with Bottles Etc

18th century
Description

Antique GEORGIAN Inlaid Mahogany Apothecary Box Chest Cabinet with Bottles etc

DESCRIPTION:? Here we have a wonderful antique GEORGIAN mahogany apothecary's chest / cabinet which has been beautifully inlaid to the top, front and rear with herringbone banding. The top has a nicely moulded edge which opens to reveal four bottles.

Below is a cupboard and when the door is opened this reveals six compartments over seven various drawers which all have lids when pulled out one of the drawers containing a glass pestle and mortar whilst others contain mixing bowls.

To the rear is another door, which can be access by first lifting the lid (which releases the lock) and then unhooking the door. This reveals eight compartments containing bottles.

DIMENSIONS: The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are: 10 1/4 inches / 26 cm wide x 8 3/4 inches / 22 cm deep x 11 3/4 inches / 30 cm high.

CONDITION: The chest is in lovely condition as can be seen from the photographs especially considering this is over 220 years old and has been a working item , just minor knocks / marks, and a couple of stains commensurate with age and use and which can be viewed in the photographs. One of the door hooks is lacking and a second hook has part of the hook lacking however each door has a hook still in place. All except two of the stoppers are fast although we have not applied much pressure to the stoppers. To the rear one bottles has a stopper lacking. To the rear the little upstand is lacking on the top shelf. Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition, as what you view is exactly what you will receive.

Please see my other items as I am selling my collection of medical instruments and apothecary boxes.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th and early 19th centuries, Georgian apothecary chests were portable wooden cabinets designed for physicians or wealthy households to store medicines, glass phials, and mixing tools securely.

High-grade dense timbers such as mahogany or walnut were standard for the exterior frame, complemented by brass carrying handles and hinges, velvet-lined compartments, and hand-blown glass stoppered bottles.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, era-appropriate brass hardware, natural timber patination, and original glass bottles exhibiting pontil marks or slight hand-blown variations.

An apothecary chest serves as a distinct decorative accent when displayed open or closed atop a study desk, side console table, or library bookshelf to add historical texture to modern rooms.

Maintain the timber by applying a clear beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, whilst keeping glass phials free from moisture and avoiding harsh chemical cleansers on original brass fittings.
