Description

Lovely mid 19th century knife and leather scabbard which is a rare survivor from the first Anglo-Afghan conflict 1839-42. The knife has a bone handle in typical tribal Afghan form which has been clearly marked on one side 'Afghanistan' and on the other 'Kandahar'. It comes complete with its original leather scabbard. It has a great folk art look and was most probably brought back by a British soldier after completion of the war. Overall condition is good for its age with only minor signs of use and wear to the knife and scabbard. A great piece for anyone interested in military history/ collector of militaria. These edged weapons date to the nineteenth-century conflicts between British India and Afghan forces, commonly known as the Anglo-Afghan Wars. Local craftsmen produced traditional sidearms such as the Pesh-Kabz and Khyber knife for tribal fighters, which were often collected as military souvenirs or campaign tokens by soldiers.
