A Charming And Attractive, Very Good Quality, 18th Century George II Period Mahogany Demi Lune Shaped Tea Table, Having Well Figured Foldover Top, To Deep Storage Compartment, Raised On Elegant Turned Legs Headed By Carved Lappets, With Original Turned Pad Feet.
Tea Tables, as suggested by the name were originally made f0r serving tea from. Quite often one of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea to the house owners and their distinguished guests.
Aside from their original purpose however tea tables suit a whole variety of different spaces around the home. They are generally pretty elegant in their design and not overpoweringly large, therefore more often than not they can be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table.
This is a really nice tea table. Constructed from dense, righ, well figured mahogany timber, probably the best and therefore most expensive that was available at the time. Throughout the near 300 years of its life this mahogany timber has retained a really good untouched colour and patina to the surface which is a feature rarely found. It is also of course a very elegant shape.
Overall the condition is very good, considering its age, but there is a couple of chunks out of the pad feet and a few old timber repairs, nothing of major concern or which is aesthetically displeasing however. As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers have inspected it and given it a natural wax polish, ensuring that it is ready to be placed straight into the home.
