Fine Tekke Carpet, Central Asia, Circa 1880, 3.26m X 2.25m

19th century
Description

The Tekke were one of the largest of the Turkmen tribes that migrated in Central Asia for centuries. They eventually came to settle on the borders of Persia and Afghanistan at the end of the 19th century, and continued to weave carpets in the nomadic tradition until well into the 20th century. 19th century Tekke carpets continue to appeal both to collectors and to those looking for a decorative carpet. This piece is a very nice example. It has soft wool with a velvety even pile. Finely knotted and in very good condition. The colours are soft and harmonious while the guls in the field are spaced elegantly. Note the main borders with the usual range of geometric ornamentation. The skirts at each end are also well-drawn. Apart from one or two very small old repairs, this lovely carpet has survived in excellent original condition with the original kilim ends and selvages still intact. Professionally cleaned. This is a lovely carpet which would look great in many settings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tekke carpets are traditional hand-knotted textiles created by the Tekke tribe of Central Asia, recognisable by their repeating octagonal motif patterns known as gols set against a rich red ground.

These carpets are constructed using finely spun wool for both the pile and foundation, dyed with natural plant extracts such as madder root to achieve deep red tones.

Authentic pieces from this period display fine knot density, flexible wool foundations, subtle natural dye variations known as abrash, and classical primary gols alongside secondary geometric motifs.

A Tekke rug provides grounding warmth and structured geometry when placed beneath a main seating group, dining table, or central desk space in traditional and contemporary schemes.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating beat bar, rotate the rug periodically to distribute wear evenly, use a quality underlay, and consult a professional conservator for deep cleaning.
