Description

Antique c. 1800–1805 Minton porcelain set – "Crazy Cow" pattern 106

This rare and exquisite Minton set features the highly sought-after pattern number 106, famously known as the "Crazy Cow" pattern and occasionally referred to as the "Bengal Tiger." Dating to c. 1800–1805, the set includes a dessert plate, a saucer, and a coffee cup.

The vibrant design showcases bright iron red, deep green, and royal blue enamels in an intricate foliate pattern, with a stylised cow (or tiger) at the centre of the saucer and plate. The "Crazy Cow" pattern is exceptionally rare, with coffee cups and saucers in this design almost never appearing on the market.

Each item in the set is marked with pattern number 106 on the bottom, confirming its authenticity.

Historical background:

Minton, one of the pioneers of English china production, was established in Staffordshire and gained fame for its fine white bone china and vibrant colours, including the iconic "Minton Blue." The "Crazy Cow" pattern, thought to be an imperfect replication of a Chinese dragon design, resulted in a unique and whimsical creature that has become a collector's favourite.

Dessert plate: Diameter 16.3 cm

Saucer: Diameter 14 cm, Height 3 cm

Coffee cup: Height 6.2 cm, Diameter 6.5 cm, Width (including handle) 8.5 cm

Condition:

Dessert plate: Two areas of enamel loss within the blue circle at the centre of the plate. A crack in the enamel on the reverse, visible only under magnification, affects the enamel but not the plate itself.

Saucer: A small red spot is visible near the border of the blue circle in the central design.

Coffee cup: Minimal wear on the rim.

FAQs

Early 19th-century Minton teaware from the Georgian and Regency periods features fine bone china decorated with intricate hand-painted enamels. Patterns were heavily influenced by imported Japanese Imari porcelain and Chinese Chinoiserie aesthetics, incorporating bold floral designs, stylized animal figures, and rich overglaze colours.

Regency porcelain trios were manufactured from bone china or soft-paste porcelain. The decorations were applied using mineral-based enamel glazes painted over an initial underglaze, often finished with hand-gilded detailing along the rims and handles.
