Depicted wearing a grey coat with large buttons and a powdered wig with buckles (rolled curls), this gentleman has traditionally been known as John Degge, a descendant of Sir Symon Degge, the seventeenth century judge and antiquarian from Staffordshire.
Signed P Mc for Patrick McMorland, the portrait is set in the original gold bracelet clasp frame.
A Scottish-born artist, Pat McMorland (1741-ca.1809) worked in the north-west based mostly in Manchester where he also lectured on art. He was a versatile artist working in a variety of styles and mediums.
