Mid-19th-century German School, Portrait Of A Woman - Antique Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brave Fine Art

This charming mid-19th-century German oil painting depicts a young woman wearing a large pink necktie atop a black bodice.

The 1850s were a period of severe political unrest in the German states following the revolutions of 1848-1849. Droves of citizens emigrated, with many heading for the USA amid growing tensions. Yet, look upon the tender expression of this delightful lady, painted in 1853, and little would you know. There’s a resilient spirit behind the sunken hazel eyes and amiable smile.

Her hairstyle is particularly interesting as it features a double parting, which was an occasional preference for women during the early part of this decade.

The painting is signed Jacobi 1853 but the artist can’t be identified. Jacobi is a surname of German origin.

Signed in the lower right and held within a later frame.
