A late 18th / early 19th century Scandinavian lidded tankard or jug made from a combination of birch, pine and fruit wood. It really does look like it has come straight from the set of the Lord of the Rings. The tankard itself has a wonderful twisted and fantastical shape, made from a hollowed out piece of birch wood and is carved in a primitive yet extremely decorative way. Topped off with a fruitwood finial to lift the lid. The lid has a wright attached underneath to keep it shut. Superb patina. Inside was a handwritten note saying, '' This wooden jug was taken to the Antiques Roadshow in 2004 when they thought it was Scandinavian. It has Roe Family connections.''
A quite remarkable and unique piece. Probably used for special occasions and ceremonies. In excellent antique condition.
