Set of 4 Ww1 Silver and Enamel Flag Menu Holders

1900 - 1920
Description

These are amazing - a set of four solid sterling silver and enamel menu holders dating from the start of WW1.

They are all hallmarked for Birmingham 1914 with the maker's mark of Levi & Salaman. 'United We Stand' was a popular patriotic motto which appeared on brooches, stamps, scarfs and many other items. These are the flags of The British Empire, France, Russia and Belgium.

The enamel appears to be in excellent condition throughout. There is a small amount of soldering on the French menu holder but otherwise the silver is also good. The box appears to be original and is tatty.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique silver menu holders are small decorative tableware items used during formal dining service in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to display printed menus or guest place cards.

These items typically feature sterling silver bases and supports, often decorated with vitreous enamel applied using champleve or cloisonne techniques to create detailed heraldic or flag motifs.

Authentication involves inspecting for official hallmarks on the silver bases, checking for hand-applied enamel with natural age wear, and verifying period-appropriate construction methods such as solder joins and solid disc foundations.

These small accents can be repurposed on a formal dining table during dinner parties, displayed on a sideboard top, or placed in a glazed cabinet alongside historical tableware collectables.

Wipe silver components gently with a dry microfibre polishing cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could damage delicate enamel, and store in a lined presentation box to prevent oxidisation.
