Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fender stools emerged during the nineteenth century as low-level seating or footrests designed specifically to sit along the hearth fender of a fireplace. During the Victorian era, these stools were crafted to complement drawing room furniture, often featuring decorative wood inlay or intricate upholstery.

Traditional Victorian fender stools were constructed using solid or veneered dark hardwoods, most notably walnut, rosewood, and mahogany. The frames were frequently decorated with marquetry or floral inlay, supported by short bun or ceramic feet, and topped with padded, upholstered seating.

Authentic nineteenth-century fender stools display signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery, natural timber patination, and period-appropriate bun or pottery feet. Marquetry inlay should exhibit subtle variations in timber grain and colour rather than synthetic, printed uniformity.

A long fender stool can be positioned along a fireplace hearth, placed at the foot of a bed, or arranged beneath a low console table. The low profile allows it to provide extra seating or decorative layering without obstructing room focal points.

Clean the walnut timber frame periodically using a soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish along the grain to maintain the finish. Position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage, and vacuum the textile upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment.
