The English Interior is thrilled to bring to market ''Ballet Duet'' a unique early and evocative example of Modern British Portraiture by celebrated and exhibited artist George Frederick Hinchcliff.
This large scale and sensitively rendered study of two male nudes dates to the end of the 1940''s and its two sinuous subjects are very well observed. One dancer faces forwards and slightly to the right with his arms outstretched, and the other is turned to one side, his back facing us with both hands upon his hips.
This fine work has a distinctly calm and elegant feel thanks to the way that the artist has rendered the sitters movement. Hichcliff has chosen a subtle and spare colour palette for this work and he cleverly uses the buff colour of the paper to help suggest the flesh tones.
Now framed under art glass (to aid conservation and minimise reflection) this work is in an excellent taste of conservation. It is ready to hang and enjoy in a fine earlier 19th century gilt frame with champagne coloured slip. It would suit either a contemporary or traditional interior.
George Frederick Hinchcliff (1894-1962)
Australian born Hinchcliff moved to England to study art, first in Yorkshire and then at the Royal College of art in London. He graduated in 1923 and exhibited at the Royal Academy and in later life he was the Head of Painting and Decoration at Leicester College of Art (see following image)
