Please see my stock page for one the largest selection of jewellery boxes available on this website.

Very early Victorian brass bound rosewood box that would be ideal to serve as a modern day jewellery box for a gentleman or lady. The dimensions of the box are such that it would fit easily on a bedside table or shelf. The box is veneered with rosewood, all original and complete. Inlaid brass bands that extend from the bottom edge of the front, across the lid AND down to the bottom edge of the back (most boxes with straps tend to stop at the back edge of the lid). The cartouche and straps are certainly original and the oval escutcheon is a replacement. Original hinges and lock. Key for decorative purposes only. Original removable mirror held in position by the original swing clasp. The mirror is original has obviously got some ‘spotting’ but folds open and stands exactly as it did when new. The base section features the original removable panel with hooped retainers to retain various accessories that have long gone but could be sourced. The leather is in excellent condition, the hoops are still fully intact as are the original pull tabs. Original divider in excellent condition. The underside of the removable panel and the bottom of the base sections have been relined with a marble effect paper, all in spotless condition. Decent box with a high degree of original features.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brass bound jewellery box is a wooden storage chest reinforced with exterior brass bands, corners, or straps. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these boxes were constructed to protect personal valuables and jewellery during travel and daily storage.

High-grade dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, coromandel, and walnut were typically used for the exterior casing. Exterior fittings were crafted from cast or sheet brass, while interior linings often featured velvet, silk, or leather.

Authentic pieces from the early Victorian period typically display solid brass fittings secured with slotted steel screws rather than modern Phillips screws. Look for natural patina on the wood and brass, original steel mortise locks, and hand-cut dovetail or mitred joinery.

An antique box can be positioned as a decorative accent on a console table, sideboard, or bookshelf. Placing it alongside modern ceramic vessels or structured stackable books creates an appealing balance of texture and era.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish to nourish the timber. Avoid abrasive cleaners on the brass fittings to preserve the natural aged patina and prevent damage to surrounding wood.
